Search the UVM Libraries' collections

Starting this month, Dana Medical Library has a new search tool available called Embase

Date:
Tuesday, January 26, 2021

The Embase database is a database of medical journal articles similar to the MEDLINE database available through PubMed and Ovid. Embase has several important features that make it a valuable complement to MEDLINE.

  • Embase indexes about 8,500 journals, while MEDLINE indexes “only” 5,200. The additional journals indexed by Embase include foreign-language journals and journals that focus on drugs and medical devices.
  • Materials in Embase are indexed using Emtree terms, which are similar to MEDLINE MeSH terms, but Emtree terms can be more granular, offering the option of more targeted searches.
  • Embase routinely indexes conference abstracts.

While there is overlap in the content of Embase and MEDLINE, Dana Librarians recommend using both Embase and MEDLINE when conducting systematic reviews.

For more information, please see Elsevier's Embase Coverage and Content page

Embase is available on the Dana Medical Library Research Databases web page under Drugs and under Medicine. Contact your Dana Librarian with any questions, or for help with an Embase search. Ask a Librarian to speak to someone via chat, email, or phone.
