Course Materials FAQs

How do I go about placing physical items on Reserve at the Dana Health Sciences Library?

Complete a Reserve request form for each course. Use the Place Items on Reserve or in Brightspace form and provide as much as information as possible, including call numbers for print books and DVDs in the UVM libraries' collection.

Request items not currently in the Libraries' collection by completing the Recommend a Purchase form, providing as much information as possible about the publisher and copyright date. You will be notified as soon as the items are available.

How long can students borrow Reserve material?

Items may be placed in the Reserve for a loan period of either 2 hours, 3 days, 7 days, or 4 weeks. Items placed on Reserve may leave the library. If choosing the 3 day, 7 day or 4 week loan periods, consider providing multiple copies of materials.

When should I place my Reserve requests? How long will it be before the requested items are available to students?

Reserve lists for each semester should be submitted as early as possible. In general, the Reserve desk can process requests within 3 working days. Reserve requests submitted after the first day of classes for the current semester could take up to 5 working days to be processed. Items that are currently checked out to another patron will take longer to process.

Can I place personal or departmental copies of books or non-print material (CDs, DVDs, videos) on Reserve?

Yes, but copies of non-print material must be legally acquired. Please bring written documentation with any copy of a CD/DVD/Video.

How can I make journal articles and book chapters accessible to students in Brightspace?

Dana library has an enormous number of electronic resources, including e-books, journals, streaming media, anatomy atlases, and more. All of these materials are searchable using the discovery tool CATQuest on Dana's home page https://dana.uvm.edu/. Create links to these materials in Brightspace. Don't hesitate to ask for assistance in locating these materials and creating links.

What if the journal articles and book chapters are only in print format?

Request a PDF for Brightspace with the Place Items on Reserve or in Brightspace form and provide as much as information as possible. Or use the Print and Mail Center's custom course packet service.

What do my students need to do to access materials on Brightspace off campus?

See our Connecting from Off Campus page for instructions on how to use the proxy server, set up VPN, and other remote access options.

What if I have more questions?

Contact Brenda Nelson at (802) 656-2200 or [email protected] with questions about Dana's Reserve Collection.
